Samsung handset metrics - Q4 2008

Samsung, the world's No. 2 handset maker by volume, is in a relatively strong position, even though the company posted its first quarterly loss in the fourth quarter. Samsung has said it will produce Android-based phones in the first half of 2009, and they will probably be glimpsed soon at Mobile World Congress. The company reorganized its business recently into two divisions, one focused on consumer products and the other on components. Choi Gee-sung, who has been president of Samsung's handset division since 2007, will head the consumer products division.   Q4 numbers:

Sales: $5.02 billion
Units shipped: 53 million
Average selling price: $133.20
Market share:  16.2 percent
